In Honor of S. Ramon Y Cajal
Acta Physiologica Scandinavica
In Honor of S. Ramon Y Cajal: On the Centenary of his Birth 1952. Stockholm, 1953
This supplement of Acta Physiologica Scandinavica is contributed by members of a research group in neurophysiology in honor of the centenary of Ramón y Cajal's birth. There are thirty-one separate articles on various aspects of neurophysiology. Of these, thirteen deal with the tracts and reflex connections in the spinal cord, three with the brain stem, and seven with the receptor peripheral nerves and nerve roots; three are concerned with the retina; two deal with technical matters and one is on bladder musculature. A translation of the summaries in Spanish is appended at the end of the volume. This wide range of studies concerned with neurophysiology indeed pays a tribute to the comprehensiveness of Cajal's work in histology, which still serves as a solid basis for investigation in this field.

Problems of Consciousness
Harold A. Abramson
Abramson, H.A. Problems of consciousness: transactions of the first conference, March 20-21, 1950, New York. New York: Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation, 1951
This is a verbatim report. Participants in the conference were 18 outstanding scientists from the fields of psychology, psychiatry, physiology, biology, embryology, and zoology. Discussion material is presented on an informal basis and centers around the problem of a sleep-wakefulness cycle, psychoanalytic concepts of sleep and dreams, perception of pain, phenomena of hypnosis, and consciousness and the chemistry of time.
The major purpose of the conference was to attempt to overcome the difficulties in communication, both emotional and semantic, between the many disciplines involved in the discussions and thus, through mutual understanding, to move toward a unification of interpretation in all fields of science, so that a "science of man" might be developed in which medicine is considered to play a central role. - JAMA Network

The Cerebral Cortex of Man
Wilder Penfield and Theodore Rasmussen
Wilder Penfield, Theodore Rasmussen. The cerebral cortex of man. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1950
This investigator briefly reviews the literature on the cerebral cortex. He discusses his observations on the stimulation of this area in conscious patients. The response is obtained most easily from the vicinity of the fissure of Rolando, but the responses were not obtained from exactly fixed areas. Penfield describes vocalization which he produced with the use of a thyratron stimulator, especially when area 12 was stimulated. Simple movements appeared to be involuntary in nature. Sensation, when produced electrically, was referred to as the periphery but unexplained. In the dream state of an epileptic patient, a hallucination was presented by discharge within one portion of the cerebral cortex, but the patient retained insight into his real environment since other portions of the cortex retained their normal functions. Penfield supports the view of Hughlings Jackson that the sensorimotor cerebral cortex represents only a middle level of integration. There seems to be no reason why the neural mechanism of consciousness should migrate outward into the newer exfoliated hemisphere with the acquisition of man's new skills and new adjustments to his environment. This level of integration may lie below the cortex and above the midbrain. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) -Archives of Neurology & Psychiatry, 40, 417–422

An introduction to Modern Psychology
Oliver L. Zangwill
Zangwill, O.L. An introduction to modern psychology. New York: Philosophical Library, 1950
This book, in the Home Study series, is devoted mainly to the experimental and physiological aspects of psychology, with three short chapters on intelligence, psychoanalysis, and the problems of personality. The author feels that "the systematic study of personality is in its infancy, and social psychology remains a dream rather than an accepted discipline." He considers that the experimental method has led to a large number of findings in the areas of sensory processes and of learning. The main purpose of the book is to make these findings available in a scientific, but clear and simple, fashion to the general reader. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

Die traumatischen und Konstitutionellen Störungen der Stimme und Sprache
Gottfried Arnold
Arnold, G. Die traumatischen und Konstitutionellen Störungen der Stimme und Sprache. Wien : Urban & Schwarzenberg, 1948
Gottfried Arnold was a son of Anton Arnold, tenor at the Vienna Court Opera. He completed his studies (as a medical doctor) at the University of Vienna and (as a pianist) at the State Academy of Music and Performing Arts. Several internships with Hermann Gutzmann (1892–1972) in Berlin deepened his phoniatric knowledge. His case studies at the Voice and Speech Ambulance of the Vienna Ear Clinic at the Vienna General Hospital led to a fundamental publication describing traumatic and constitutional disorders of voice and speech (Die traumatischen und konstitutionellen Störungen der Stimme und Sprache, Vienna 1948). He coauthored the fundamental textbook on voice and speech medicine (Lehrbuch der Stimm- und Sprachheilkunde, first edition Vienna, 1949) together with the Swiss phoniatre Richard Luchsinger (1900–1993).
