Description

Specific gravity balance, accession no.44; circa 1920

The specific gravity balance provides a measure of weight as a function of volume. Dr. Donald D. Van Slyke used this instrument to indirectly measure the iron, or hemoglobin, content of red blood cells. As of its higher hemoglobin content, blood from a healthy donor registered a a higher specific gravity than that from anemic donor.
