This instrument measures the surface tension of a liquid placed in the glass dish. The force required to separate the ring from the liquid surface is read on the circular scale. Pierre Lecomte du Noüy invented the device which was later manufactured by Cenco, to measure the surface tension of blood serum. Pierre Lecomte du Noüy worked in the laboratory of Alexis Carrel.
