French hollow-handled scalpels, accession no. 15; circa 1900s

Scalpels (bistouries) with hollow handles, made in France and chosen for use by Dr. Alexis Carrel, whose pioneer work in blood-vessel surgery won him a Nobel Prize in 1912 - the firs for medicine to be awarded to a scientists in America and in the history of The Rockefeller University.
