Description
Culture flask for intracellular parasites, accession no.270; 1976
The parasite Palsmodium falciparum causes malaria by infecting red blood cells. To develop a vaccine against the disease, or to test potential compounds for treating it, Palsmodium falciparum must be propagated in the laboratory. This was first achieved by William Trager who developed this apparatus in 1976. Infected red blood cells sit in a thin layer at the bottom of the flask while a bath of nutrients flows continuously over them.
