Avery's handwritten text of the discussion section of the DNA paper, published in 1944 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine
Avery, Macleod, and McCarty had accumulated all the basic experimental information and presented their discovery to The Rockefeller Institute's Board of Scientific Directors in April 1943. Their report that the transforming principle was DNA, "Studies on the chemical nature of the substance inducing transformation of pneumococcal types. Induction of transformation by a desoxyribonucleic acid fraction isolated from pneumococcus type III," was published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine in February 1944.
