Journal of Molecular Biology, 1990: 215(3)
During the 1970s and 1980s, work from the Sellers lab led to the development of BLAST, a widely used computerized DNA and protein database search program.
The BLAST paper was the most highly cited paper published in the 1990s. The first author, Stephen F. Altschul, graduated summa cum laude in mathematics from Harvard in 1979. After two years teaching in Rome, he returned to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he got interested in sequence comparison and worked predominantly with Bruce Erickson and Peter Sellers at Rockefeller University.
