Description

Bunge Micro Balance, accession no.76; circa 1920s

It is one of the first mechanical balances to weight to the sixth decimal place (to 1 microgram). The scale is read at the top of the balance by reflected light. Static electricity is a great problem in weighing very tiny amounts of a substance. Charge powders will no drop from the spatula into the ban and can fly into the air. This balance was used by Dr. Donald Van Slyke in the 1920s.
