Description
Paul Greengard at the 2018 Pearl Meister Greengard Prize Ceremony
"It's the name of my mother, Pearl Meister Greengard. Her maiden name was Pearl Meister and her married name was Pearl Meister Greengard. And there's a committee of scientists, several Nobel laureates on the committee and other very distinguished people, who select the prize winner each year. And we now have - and the university also - well, both the university and I got other people to contribute to the prize, so it's got a nice endowment now they give out, the prize is now $100, 000.
And the first year we gave it out, Paul Nurse was the president, and the idea was the president would bestow the prize. And then he had the idea, why don't we have a very distinguished woman who is not in biomedical research give the prize? So, the first woman to present the prize was Sandra Day O'Connor, who was the first Supreme Court justice of the female gender ever." - Paul Greengard, Oral History
