This article by Dr. Dubos was based on a Lowell Lecture in a series on "Disease and the Advancement of Basic Science" published under this title (edited by Dr. H. K. Beecher) by the Harvard University Press. The lecture appeared also in Daedalus (the Journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences), Vol. 88, No.3 (1959), pp 410-424. OCCASIONAL PAPERS by the faculty and friends of The Rockefeller Institute are published at irregular intervals by The Rockefeller Institute Press, New York 21. This is Occasional Paper Number Five.
