Five diseases were the initial priorities for study: poliomyelitis, lobar pneumonia, syphilis, heart disease and intestinal infantilism, or celiac disease.
Rufus Cole immediately set about identifying young associates to share his vision and work with him to create the new hospital-laboratory. At the beginning and throughout his 28-year tenure as director, he showed an extraordinary ability to select promising candidates for success in his endeavor.
