Description
Letter from Louise Pierce to Simon Flexner, 1913
In 1913, Louise Pearce was on the staff of the Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at John Hopkins Hospital. Although she held a prestigious office post, she wanted to have a laboratory research position. Therefore, she wrote to Dr. Simon Flexner to apply for a research position. Simon Flexner was impressed by her excellent academic record and wanted to include a woman on the institute’s scientific staff. He hired her as an assistant fellow to work directly under him.
