Description

An early model of the automated peptide synthesizer, 1965

It took Bruce Merrifield three years to work out the details and achieve a successful synthesis using the method, which he published in 1963. Predicting for the start that " the new synthetic approach would be particularly suited to mechanization and eventually to automation," Dr. Merrifield, his colleagues John Stewart and Nils Jernberg, head of the Rockefeller's instrument shop, started to design an automated synthesizer in 1963 and two years later had their first little one.
