Description
In 1950, William Trager cultured the avian malaria parasite Plasmodium using red blood cell extracts and showed it relies on its host for nutrients crucial for growth, reproduction, and initiating infection. In 1976, he developed the first successful method to culture the red blood cell stage of the human species Plasmodium falciparum.
