Günter finished school in 1954 but as a member of the “capitalist” classes was barred from studying at a university in East Germany. Fortunately, travel to West Germany was not yet a problem, so he studied medicine in Frankfurt and then in Kiel, München and Tübingen, graduating in 1960 from the University of Tübingen
