Merrill W. Chase and Karl Landsteiner jointly investigated normal immunity, anaphylaxis, and allergy to drugs. Spread over a number of years, their joint researches were set out in 18 publications. It was Chase too who was in on the first edition of Landsteiner's book Die Spezifizitat der Serologischen Reaktionen (1933). He also contributed to the first English editions in 1936 and 1945; sponsored another edition in 1962, and contributed a highly characteristic and affectionate preface.
