Dr. Carrel's laboratory, n.d.

Courtesy of the Rockefeller Archive Center

"At the Rockefeller Institute, Carrel was given great autonomy to organize the surgical rooms as he liked - such as dark operating room walls and dark operation clothes to reduce glare - and to train, in Carrel's words, "absolutely ignorant assistants" without interference from Flexner, who supported all of Carrel's requests".
